WHAT IS CHANUKKAH?

CHANUKKAH

in Hebrew Means Dedication

Short Story

Chanukkah in Hebrew means Dedication. It is an eight-day Festival of Lights that begins on the 25th of the Jewish month of Kislev. It celebrates the triumph of light over darkness, of purity over adulteration, of spirituality over materiality.

More than twenty-one centuries ago, the Holy Land was ruled by the Seleucids (Syrian-Greeks), who sought to forcefully Hellenize the people of Israel. When they conquered Jerusalem and the Temple they defiled it by sacrificing pigs on The Altar of The LORD and by raising a statute of Zeus that all needed to worship. The Jewish people were forbidden of reading the Torah, of being circumcised, keeping the Sabbath, eating kosher or any other Law Commanded by HASHEM. Against all odds, a small band of faithful Jews defeated one of the mightiest armies on earth, drove the Greeks from the land, reclaimed the Holy Temple in Jerusalem and rededicated it to the Service of The LORD.

Traditionally, it is believed that when they sought to light the Temple's menorah (the seven branched candelabrum), they found only a single cruse of olive oil that had escaped contamination by the Greeks; miraculously, the one-day supply burned for eight days, until new oil could be prepared under conditions of ritual purity.

To commemorate and publicise these miracles, the Maccabees instituted the festival of Chanukkah - 1 Maccabees 4:59 Then Judas and his brothers and all the assembly of Israel determined that every year at that season the days of dedication of the altar should be observed with joy and gladness for eight days, beginning with the twenty-fifth day of the month of Kislev.

At the heart of the festival is the Lighting of a nine branch Menorah called Hanukkiah: each candle is lighted by a special candle called the Shamash which means Servant . On the first evening we light a single flame, two on the second evening, and so on till the eighth night of Hanukkah, when all eight lights are kindled.

The main theme of Chanukkah is the re-dedication of the Temple of YHVH by purifying it from all defilement. It is a time to rededicate our lives as the Temple of the Holy Spirit, our homes, our families, our congregations, Israel, the Holy Temple that will be rebuilt again according to prophecy, etc. It is also the Festival of Lights, and Yeshua being the Light Of the world He is Celebrated throughout all the Festival by the Messianic Jews and Christians that understand that He Is The Messiah Of Israel. He is the One that cleanse us from all defilement when we repent from our sins. Yeshua was also conceived in Chanukkah.

For me it is a time to bring light into my life, my home, my family and all the relevant areas. Personally is one of the richest times in all year as the focus is on freedom from sin and defilement and consecration to the Living God.

Yeshua was in Chanukkah at The Temple in Jerusalem. Remember that Chanukkah in Hebrew means Dedication in English.

John 10:22-23 Now it was the Feast of Dedication in Jerusalem, and it was winter. And Jesus walked in the temple, in Solomon’s porch.
